Long May You Run

When I was searching for a blog title, I had two ideas. The first was to name the blog after a Draft Punk song, "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger." It seemed fitting enough since those are the things you want to be when running. But upon further consideration, I thought the title might be misinterpreted to being about something WAY different than running.

Then I thought of my other favorite running song: Neil Young's Long May You Run. The more I listened to the lyrics and thought about it, I realized it would be a perfect title.

I grew up on Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, so to hear Neil Young's voice is just, well... comforting. Allegedly, the song is about an old car Neil Young owned, which helps to explain the "chrome heart" and "trunks of memories." But I think runners can identify with the song just as well as automobile lovers.

To me, the song is about perseverance and dedication. It's a reminder that no matter the circumstances or what life throws at you, you just keep running. Sometimes you get knocked down, beat up, discouraged, or discarded- but keep on running. Through life's changes and life's losses- keep on running. When you feel like you've failed at something- keep on running. If at first you don't succeed- keep on running.

Go ahead and put this on your long run playlist. When you want to throw in the towel you're so tired, maybe it will remind you why you do it: why you run.

(and may Neil Young be a reminder for all the boys and girls that doing drugs makes you very scary looking!)
